How to connect to free-Wifi in Japan

There’s a popular image of Tokyo as a mecca for technology, so it’s understandable that a lot of visitors get frustrated by the lack of free Wi-Fi. And, when it is available, the connection process isn’t always all that simple. We’ve put together a guide to help you out.

Japan's free-wifi

Japan is definitely behind the pack in the Wi-Fi stakes with free spots being few and far between in Tokyo. Even at the locations that are available, it’s often hard to login because the instructions are written in Japanese.

These days we rely so much on an internet connection that not having one can be an unwanted stress on an otherwise fun holiday. I feel exactly the same when I go abroad. I don’t want to pay high data roaming charges but I don’t always know how to get where I want to go either. Finding free Wi-Fi spots always makes me grateful for not having to worry about it back home in Japan. Saying that, Tokyo definitely has some good options, and the ubiquitous convenience store provides one of the easiest locations to get connected.
